49. L'Être et le néant - part I

Part one:

A being is born, and as it becomes self-aware it grows afraid of itself.

Part two (to be posted later):

It begins to devour itself in an attempt to return to the pre-embryonic state of non-existence.

Coloured pencils, markers. A5
Title borrowed from Jean-Paul Sartre's Being and Nothingness.

47. Sketches for a painting - Narrow

Just a few preparatory sketches of the painting to get an idea what I am currently occupied with.
The source inspiration is my back alley, right in the old city centre. What fascinated me was the lack
of space so clearly apparent in the city planning: It seems as if the street was carved into a block of
buildings, much like a lump of cheese, a narrow opening between spaces.

The painting is 75x110cm, layers and layers of acrylics.

45. Antigone

Antigone #1

Inspired by Jean Anouilh's version (1942) of the Greek tragedy.

The inspiration for this painting was a metaphor of Antigone as a young child playing
in the sand, never minding the impending storm behind her back. After several sketches, I
decided that colours and forms alone worked better in expressing the sense of looming
consequences despite our apparent freedom, and the inevitable loss of innocence.

Acrylics on canvas, 75x110cm
